Cape Town Trip: The Journey

I thought it could be fun to add to my Tour South Africa series with a few blog posts about my mini-holiday-within-a-holiday to Cape Town. I grew up in Johannesburg but to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the hubby and I took our parents down to Cape Town for a few days to catch up.

So we headed to OR Tambo airport, got on our plane and started taxiing down the runway. I decided to get some good shots of the beautiful South African landscape, so I got my camera out (I had the window seat. Yes!). We were leaving the approaching rain behind us.

We took off, and I got some great shots of the suburbs below, and some shots of mine dumps (if you don't know what a mine dump is, please follow this link - if you visit Johannesburg you will see a lot of them. They are basically leftovers from the mining process, and Johannesburg isn't called the City of Gold for nothing! They are now being reprocessed because there is gold in them still)

We lifted up above the clouds...

and then the Captain came over the speakers, quite unexpectedly. There was smoke coming from one of the restrooms. Yes, he's right, I had smelt something strange... and we were turning around, so that the engineers could check out what was going on.

Oh. Ok. The plane began to turn, and then hit a pocket of air. We dropped a few feet and a few people squealed. Super.

When we landed, there were four fire engines waiting for us. And some other emergency vehicles. Hmm.

And then the firemen came on board to check it out... with those giant helmets on.

How did they get into that tiny loo!?

We disembarked, and waited a couple of hours. We got on another plane (something about a faulty hydraulic system, so yep, I liked our new plane) and headed on our way. No trouble this time, but I had an aisle seat. No pics until Cape Town.

I hadn't been since I was about twelve so I was wondering what to expect - and the mountains we could see from the airport did not disappoint. Nor did the view from our rented house in Fish Hoek, either. Take big, deep breaths. Take it all in.

Then we headed off to nearby by Simonstown for dinner, where the South African Navy comes home to roost (and where the great Just Nuisance once walked). I ate my much loved and missed kingklip, and it was a meal from heaven. With a view to match.

We went for 6 days, and hired a car. With our rented house, air ticket, food, booze (but not a lot!), all our sightseeing, it turned out to be $500 a person. In peak tourist season. So if you'd like to visit South Africa, you should know it will be reasonable once you get there. And once you see the rest of my photos, you will want to go.

The Here & Now

I don't like this blog to be one of those navel-gazing blogs, but I know I always like to read more about the people who's blogs I like. So I'd like to share a bit about me, if you'd like to hear. I know this is late for a January-resolution type blog entry, but since I've got back from my South Africa trip things have been kind of nuts. So end of January will have to do.

I've always been someone who thinks they're focused on the now; you know, take the time to notice the beautiful snow on the trees after a storm, or see the rainbow in the sky. Maybe think to myself how lucky I am when I'm surrounded by good friends. But I never realized I am also the person who is always planning for the future; a future life. Maybe something I've dreamed of but will probably not come entirely true.

I'm not sure what did it, but I know realize that I've never really appreciated the present because of this. I'm always planning for what's to come, instead of enjoying what I have. I think my change of heart may have had something to do with my trip home: I felt like I had connected with who I was before I came to the States. I did stuff I used to do, and used to love. My brother reintroduced me to birdwatching. I've been a bird watcher all my life but stopped when I moved to the States. Was I overwhelmed and was too caught up with keeping afloat? Maybe. But today I stopped at the bookstore and picked up the Sibley field guide to the birds of North Eastern United States. Things are going to change around here!

Not only have I picked up my first American birding book but I decided to pay more attention to my apartment - sure, its not a home that I've bought, the one I've been dreaming of, but its my home right now. I've been inspired by all those terrariums on my favourite blogs, so I followed this simple tutorial from Amy Merrick, and made one to go on my fabulous new Ikea PS cabinet side board.

I also finally got to recovering some old floor cushions I've had for years - I cut the fabric out about two years ago and never finished them. I was probably terrified of how to put in a zip! Well, now I know.

Do you like the cushion on top? Its a great addition to my collection from Mr Price's LOVE RSA range (I also have the tin under my sink, holding my new sponges, and another two cushions in the spare room!).

I spotted this in one of the magazines I got while in South Africa, and I am. in. love.

African Urchins - each one is unique, the design based on mother nature's best: those beautiful little urchins that wash up on South Africa's beaches.

They come in gold, rose gold, silver and with and without stones... starting at about $300 for the tiny silver one (with no stones!) I'm thinking its something I'll be saving up for.

I'm Back! And Happy New Year!

After a wonderful holiday I'm back. I was so blessed to be able to spend a good three and a half weeks with family, in some of the most beautiful places in the world. I hope your festive season was as good, and that this year will be a great one for you.

This is just a snippet from my trip. I'll share lots next week: for now, my major goals in life are to not fall asleep at work, and to try stay awake passed 8:30pm. A seven hour time difference will do that to you!

Tour South Africa: the Quaint

Sadly, today is the last of our trip around South Africa with Sam. But I do think she saved the best for last - these are her suggestions if you'd like to enjoy some of the more quaint aspects of South Africa.

If you like something quaint...

" Visit the picturesque town of Clarens in the Free State. Set against the backdrop of the Maluti Mountains, this little town is an art lover's dream. Visit one of the galleries and be inspired to create your own paintings.

On your way to a Kruger Safari? Don't forget to stop by Pilgrim's Rest. It seems that time has stood still in this antique mining town. The historic 1870's village is a living memory of South Africa's lucrative gold rush era.

Enjoy the beauty of nature at the foothills of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. I usually go once a year, over Christmas. The scenery is breathtaking during summer and there is nothing to match the peaceful ambience and lush green environment. If you like the great outdoors, do attempt the hiking trails, horse riding, mountain biking and adventure sports. Or like me, just grab a good book and relax amidst your beautiful, placid surroundings.

Wakkerstroom is the hidden jewel of Mpumalanga and one of the premier bird watching districts in the country. It is a charming little town where you can escape for the weekend, far from the traffic, noise and hustle and bustle of the city.

If you're in Durban...

"Do shop at Gateway Theatre of Shopping. It is my favourite mall in the entire country. You will find everything you need under one roof - fashion, shoes, home decor, movies, restaurants, electronics, computers, furniture, as well as groceries. You're also spoiled for choice when it comes to entertainment. Ride a surfboard at the wave house, watch a play at the Barnyard Theatre, go indoor rock climbing, go-carting, bowling, take your kids to the Fantasy Forest arcade or indoor amusement park... the list is endless. You may never want to leave.

Visit the Essenwood Flea market every Saturday in Musgrave, to purchase indigenous African artwork, home made delicacies, crafts and clothes. Don't miss out on the scrumptious avo-on-toast, I've never seen anything sell that fast.

Eating out: have Italian food at Luna Blu or Spiga d'Oro in Morningside, Indian at Jaipur Palace, healthy at Nourish in Westville, break some plates at the Grecian Plaka, or dine al fresco at Bean Bag Bohemia. If you like spicy Portuguese food, drive down to Ballito to sample oceanic delights at Beira Alta.

For something indulgent, book a High Tea at the Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga, where you will be served decadent desserts, pastries and luscious mini cakes in the opulently decorated Palm Court.

Take a cable car over the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which is a modern architectural masterpiece that was built for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. You will be awe-inspired by the 360 degree view of the city.

Experience the wonders of the sea at uShaka Marine World, which also has a water park.

Drive further up the East Coast and go fishing in St Lucia, snorkelling at the nearby Cape Vidal, or scuba diving in Sodwana Bay."

More Campaign Furniture

If you've read this blog before, you know I'm a huge sucker for campaign furniture (read here and here). The latest issue of House & Leisure magazine has an opening story with lovely safari-style settings filled with it.

It reminded me of some of the campaign furniture I've seen lately in other places:

This Dunlin chair is actually modelled after the chairs used by East India Company during British Colonial times.

I would kill for these two campaign chests - as seen on Good Bones Great Pieces.

"Have a cup of coffee in the bohemian district of Melville, where culture, arts and interesting people collide.

Shop at The Mall of Rosebank. You will find a stylish mix of chain stores and exclusive boutiques. A word of warning: you will leave with an armful of shopping bags and a maxed out credit card. Eat at the Melrose Arch Piazza. It's a trendy social locale where you can get dressed up for a romantic dinner or just a fun evening with friends.

If you go during your lunch hour, you can get some shopping done at the luxury Melrose Arch Mall. There are a variety of continental restaurants you can try, from authentic African at Moyo, Greek at Mezepoli, Asian at Orient or Italian at Piza e Vino."

House Beautiful has Done It Again

I just got the Dec/Jan 2012 issue of House Beautiful and they have yet another house featured that is just up my street. The gorgeous West Hollywood house of Mark D Sikes is meant to have the breezy elegance of a house in St Barts - and for me its just so inviting and beautiful! Serene white with punches of black. Stripes! Florals! Chinoiserie, chandeliers and seashells! Bamboo, caning and wallpaper. Masculine and feminine. I'd like to move there now.

There are not too many images online yet, so I've done some scanning. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I'll be checking out the Mark D Sikes blog regularly from now on, I think.

Cape Town Design City 2014

I've just had the most glorious day - a lot of good friends over for brunch: lots of food, laughter and running around with everyone's kids. This is what this time of year is for! And I am so blessed, with good friends like the one who knows me well enough to bring me the most magnificent flowers (easiest way to make me happy), the other one who knows me well enough to know I am overwhelmed with getting food ready so she puts them in water for me, and yet another one who quietly does some washing up while no one is looking so that clean-up time goes quickly when everyone has left.

The perfect ending to our 2011 Thanksgiving weekend.

Weekends aside, there is something I've been meaning to look into for a while now, and that is that Cape Town has been chosen as the World Design Capital for 2014.

Of course my first reaction on hearing this was woohoo! And then, a second later, what does this mean?

I did some checking on the Cape Town 2014 website. Here's some info (all from the website, but put together by moi):

The World Design Capital title is awarded bi-annually by the International Council for Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) to give global prominence to cities that use design for their social, economic and cultural development. The World Design Capital title is awarded in advance, allowing winning cities sufficient time to plan, develop and promote a year-long programme of World Design Capital-themed events for their designated year.

Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 bid concept, “Live Design, Transform Life”, focuses strongly on socially responsive design.

The year 2014 represents a significant milestone for Cape Town and South Africa, marking 20 years since we embraced freedom in 1994. For this reason, 2014 will be a momentous year, as we take stock of the challenges and gains of our transformation, and celebrate the achievements of the past two decades, both as a City and as a country.

Our bid recognizes and mobilises Cape Town’s considerable design resources towards addressing the legacies of our City’s apartheid past. It is aimed specifically at dealing with the vast imbalances that exist in our society and is organized into three broad themes: Rebuild Cape Town through community cohesion; Reconnect Cape Town through infrastructural enhancement, and Reposition Cape Town for the knowledge economy.

The global landscape has changed irrevocably in recent years. Devastating economic and natural disasters have had a sobering effect on all aspects of life, including design. There is a growing need for practical design thinking, participatory methods and people-centred solutions to real problems. In this context, Cape Town has much to inspire the world. Ours is a proudly African bid, with the ultimate goal of achieving a sustainable, inclusive and more liveable African city, rooted in the strengths of our people and communities – to ‘Live Design. Transform Life.’

It just blows me away - its all that I love about design, and it seems to address a lot of the needs that South Africa has at this point (you can read more info on this page). Right now there doesn't seem to be too much info on the year-long programme of events in/for the city, but the website itself is already showcasing some inspiring stuff.

Just in one competition - Design Indaba's Your Street - three great ideas were considered, and I believe these are the kind of projects that will get more traction because Cape Town is 2014 World Design Capital.

Acre Road in Kensington, Cape Town, won the R100 000, which means a community that needs uplifting will get a new soccer field, and dance area, using recycled rubbish.

Growing and greening the city was a proposal to deal with urbanisation and feeding the city.

And a simple idea of painting fire retardant paint that could prevent fires in squatter camps and save lives also was one of the finalists.

I'm excited to see what else this means for innovative design that works for Cape Town, and hopefully for South Africa as a whole. I'll keep a watch on the World Design Capital Bid 2014 website but if you see anything interesting, let me know!

Gosh, where did the week go? Christmas shopping, visa applications (anyone else travelling for Christmas?), crawling into bed early one night, making dinner, walking the dogs in the rain in the dark... and not getting to blog. But here's something I need to share - I picked up my November issue of House Beautiful tonight, which I haven't had time to get through and had a good look at the Vermont home of Deidre Heekin and Caleb Barber. I'd like to live in their house!

I love the mix of modern and traditional, the saturated colours, the wood, the gold, the white... it just seems homey and beautiful.

Russell Smith

So you know how at the end of the year you have plans to take time off but that means you have to work extra hard before you leave and extra hard when you get back to get all the work done (and all the Christmas shopping, and get the dogs organized for the kennel, and, and, and)? I'm there right now.

So I haven't been too inspired lately, and when it came to today's post I was at a loss. Until I saw Russell Smith's work on desire to inspire (so it works! that blog does inspire!). And, can I just say, it's great to recognize some of those pics from posts I've written about Frank Features (check it out here).

So anyway, I just spent way too much time on the Russell Smith website, pouring over his portfolio. Full of some of my favourite South African personalities, beautiful interiors, wonderfully lit travel scenes, perfectly styled stills, beautiful shots of beautiful children... oh, I should stop gushing now and just share (I did have to restrain myself and not show you everything I screenshotted).

Suno

I came across this beautiful image in the most recent issue of Vogue.

The patterns, colour and movement just caught my eye. Turns out these guys are Suno - Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty (seen here with model Yaya DaCosta). And no wonder their work attracted me because it's based in Kenya! This is from their website.

Using vintage Kenyan textiles that Osterweis had been collecting for years, they created their first small collection, produced predominantly in Kenya... I've pulled a few of my favourite things from their website for you to enjoy - and you can buy it all too, from Barneys, or a few other retailers, if you have a $100 for a sun hat (on sale) or $800 for a dress (not on sale). Which is somewhat beyond my means, but a girl can dream, right?

Snow in October

The Light in Fall

There's something funny about this time of year. I know in the southern hemisphere I'd be feeling awake, and ready to take on the world right now. Up here in the north, things are more quiet. I'm more into getting cozy than taking on the world.

You look at the light differently. Well, maybe because the light is different. I get a little more contemplative. I read two blogs regularly that are filled with beautiful images, lots of great style and sometimes interesting sayings or quotes. Put up by real people, things that make you stop the on-going rhythm of every day life, and think about something for a minute or two.

They're perfect indications of the mood.

Tour South Africa: Pretoria

Today I've asked Sam from Frills and Thrills, my go-to for fashion info (and the best Fashion Week coverage in my opinion!), to tell us more about her favourite places to visit in South Africa. I've decided to split up her choices by city, so we can appreciate each one (and if someone googles the city, they will hopefully find useful info here!)

Sam lives in a small town on the border of three provinces - Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal & Free State and is also directly in the middle of the route between Durban and Johannesburg. Sam's biggest passion is writing, with fashion is secondary to that. She's a great resource for the Tour South Africa series because she loves stumbling upon quaint little South African Towns, social anthropology, and gaining insight into other cultures. Oh yes, and she has a major obsession with Eastern Europe.

Right, first up! Pretoria!

" Visit the Union Buildings. It is an architectural marvel that forms a part of our rich history. Take a leisurely walk around the beautiful terraced gardens while you're there.

Eat at Cappuccinos Restaurant in Menlyn Park. I used to eat there at least once a week, while I attended Tuks University. It's one of my all-time favourite eateries that serve the most delicious Italian food. Sit on the deck outside and enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Explore the Pretoria Zoo. I've been there on numerous occasions, yet never tire of seeing exotic animals such as grizzly bears, lions, tigers and the elusive red panda. It is the largest zoological garden in the country and houses a walk-through aviary, aquarium and reptile park.

Shop at Menlyn Park, Brooklyn or Centurion Lake Mall. Each of these offer similar stores in a relaxed shopping environment."

Old Skool Spook

Happy Halloween everyone! This year we've had quite a few little monsters at our front door, which is more than last year (it was dead quiet around here, har har). There was a Frankenstein, a few princesses, some just plain old scary monsters, a fairy, Tinkerbell, a bumblebee, Spiderman and some others. I'm glad the teenagers didn't stop at my stoep because I didn't want to have to tell them that they are too old for trick or treating.

My best story from tonight? Our new neighbours upstairs left a note on their door that said, "Sorry! No candy - baby sleeping, please do not ring doorbell". Interesting that they are a bunch of single grad students!

I thought it would be fitting tonight to share some pics I took last summer down on Cape Cod, in one of Barnstable's oldest cemetries, Lothrop Hill Cemetery. Some of them are just beautifully made, and others have become more beautiful as the time passes and the lichens grow.

If you are lucky enough to be in New York in the next month, make sure you stop by RH Gallery to see Paul Edmunds' exhibition, Pitch.

If you're like me, and a bit slow when it comes to contemporary art you should watch this video. Why? Because Paul talks about how his work correlates to music (true! I can almost hear the sounds) and that made me "see" the work more easily.

Also because if you are a designer/artist/been in an art class you will laugh because he talks about erasing pencil with bread, and you will gasp because HE USES A MECHANICAL PENCIL (I strongly object, although I draw the line *cough*cough* at sharpening with a knife).

Joburg Photowalkers

When I was at university I took an amazing photography course in an area of Johannesburg called Newtown. I learned a lot. About photography, myself, Newtown and also the wonderful people I did the course with. So I only have admiration (and some jealousy!) for the Joburg Photowalkers - they get together every month and, as their website says, "explore Joburg through a lens, one photo walk at a time".

Beautiful photos (there's even some of Newtown! The first one is the old Park Station in Newtown, right behind the buildings where I developed my first film.)

House Stalking

I'm taking a leaf from one of my favourite blogs, desire to inspire, and sharing some house stalking. I love this house (I've been calling it the Marlin House) right near picturesque Christmas Cove, Maine.

Literally up the street from a small harbor, and some of the most beautiful coastline in Maine, its a catch (*cough*cough*). It's got that old, comfy house feeling going on, y'know, like visiting the summer house that's been in the family for generations. Great for feeling relaxed and totally not caring if you still have sand on your feet when you walk in.

Fall in New England

It's funny to me how things never happen in isolation - a couple week's back I wrote about Fable wines, and then last week Debutant, from De Kleine Wijn Koop (they have google translator on their site), shows up on The Dieline.

With a spellbinding design by the talented peeps at Fanakalo (read more about them here), it made one of my American non-wine drinking work buddies say, if he were to drink wine it would be this. Indeed.

What Women Want

Women can make a difference in this world. We have proof: three Nobel prize winners this year.

I strongly believe women are an under-used, under-utilised and sometimes abused resource in our world. Thanks to Ansie, I have an exciting opportunity to share.

Today, more than 600 million girls live in the developing world. Approximately one-quarter of these girls are not in school.
Adolescent girls are uniquely capable of raising the standard of living in the developing world. It has been shown: she will reinvest her income and knowledge back into her family and her community. As an educated mother, an active citizen, an ambitious entrepreneur or prepared employee, a girl will break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
That is the Girl Effect.
Yet, despite her proven potential, she is more likely to be uneducated, a child bride, and exposed to HIV/AIDS. Less than two cents of every international development dollar is directed at her.

Knysna by the Sea

I spent one of my favourite of all time holidays in Knysna - how could I not? Being on the water, good food, beautiful forests near by, boats, trains and going to Featherbed and having the best fish I've ever had. The only thing that would've made it better was if I stayed at this house that I spotted on House & Leisure's website this week.

I love the black exterior, corrugated iron roof and walls inside, the wood panelling, the lived-in feel... it looks like bliss.

Merchants on Long is a place after my own heart - they stock contemporary African design, from fashion to homewares, in their beautiful shop in Cape Town.

Not only are their wares beautiful but the building itself is something else. You can read about the renovation on their website.

I recently spotted these on design work life

My two worlds collide in these wines: produced by Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards in South Africa, and beautifully packaged by Adam&Co. in Boston. The names of the wines are based on three African fables. You can read them on the Tulbagh website here (and it's recommended reading!)

With Joburg on my mind, I decided to look up Maira Koutsoudakis, who has constantly inspired me throughout her career. She recently transformed a Joburg landmark restaurant, Stephanie's, into a warm and sparkling experience called Life Grande Cafe'.

Glitz and glam is not really my thing, but this place is warm and inviting! I'd love to put on my heels and head over there! Not surprising, as this is what Maira says about the place, “The older I get, the more I believe in character, in the multilayered. I wanted to create a place of paradoxes. The decor, the food, the retail offerings and the design elements are all about contradiction and juxtaposition. It’s about combining earthy with a strong glam factor; industrial elements with luxury.”

Although there's marble and designer chairs, there is also comfort food and a wood-burning oven. There are bullets in the floor but rustic wood on the wall. The floor is marble, with inlays of thin brass stripes, about which Maira says, "I’m a Jozi girl, I want the warmth and glitter of gold.”

Tour South Africa: Johannesburg

Jozi in the house! We finally to get to my hometown, where I was born 'n raised. I've asked Hayley, who blogs over at everything in between. Thanks Hayley!

To recap, this is part of a series I'm hosting on South of the Sahara for anyone interested in where to visit, what to do, and what to eat in South Africa (you can also read about Cape Town and Durban). And do click on the images to see them better.

"Whatever you want to call it… is my home. I have been privileged to live in two other gorgeous cities in South Africa… but I am a Jozi girl, through and through… and a very proud one at that.

Joburg often gets a bad rap… mostly from other South Africans. But beneath the concrete city buildings, endless highways and its negative associations… lies a city that I love, a city that throbs with energy, and a city that is beautiful in its own right… you just need to take the time to discover it.

When Kirsten asked me to do this post… I thought… if I had two or three days in Joburg… what would I not want to miss out on?

A trip to Joburg, is not complete without a trip on The Gautrain. She is our newest and shiniest addition to our city. I have started with the Gautrain, as you can use her to get around most of the city {and if you have time take a trip to Pretoria, our capital city}. We are super proud of our Gautrain.

So here goes… some really cool things to do and see… in no particular order…

Shopping is a must in this city. The usual suspect always pops up… Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square. It has everything you want, from designer shops right down to the bargain buys. The mall is usually on everyone’s list. But, my favourite, has to be Melrose Arch. A great place for dinner as well… and at Christmas time… it’s full of Christmas lights. I am cheating here, but I am going to include a mall that technically falls outside of Joburg, the Irene Village Mall. If you have a chance try and spend some time in Irene, you get to experience real country life right outside the city.

Then if you want to hit the markets these are a must… Rosebank Rooftop Market, Market on Main and the newly opened Neighbourhood Goods Market.

If eating good food is your thing… like it is mine. There are few iconic places to go…

High tea at the Westcliff Hotel is a must. Besides the food been beyond divine, is the view that is the real winner. You get to see Jozi at her finest. If you are in town during Spring…it’s even more spectacular, as the Jacarandas are in full bloom.

Experience an African menu at the fabulous Moyo’s at the Zoo.

And don’t forget to experience a Jozi sunset from one of the many rooftop decks around the city, with a cocktail in hand of course.

And then of course there is the sightseeing…

Head south of Joburg… a day at Gold Reef City… seriously too much fun, especially if you have kids. And a trip to the Apartheid Museum is an emotional trip back into our history. And then, organise yourself a tour through Soweto. This is so worthwhile… and you get to experience life in this vibrant township.

A trip to the Lion and Rhino Park is key. You get to experience our wildlife up close and personal, and its literally just down the road. And a trip to the Cradle of Mankind and Maropeng.

Experience a taste of Joburg suburbia, by spending an afternoon in Parkhurst. Walking the tree lined streets, where there are dozens of outdoor restaurants and pubs, and plenty of unique shops. And not to mention the many museums and art galleries scattered across the city.

Joburg is massive, and so varied. One minute you are in the heart of skyscrapers and the next, in the middle of the country. One minute you are walking the vibrant streets of a township and the next in aisles of Louis Vuitton.

There is so much to do… you just need to embrace it and enjoy the ride.

I love Jozi.

If you read design*sponge, you will know they just published their first book, and a newspaper, and just about everyone is writing about it.

Grace Bonney, the blogger behind design*sponge, recently wrote about the design capitals of the world in the UK's Town and Country House magazine. She had this to say about Cape Town:

I've been dying to visit Cape Town since I first started my blog back in 2004. So many of the designers here are inspired and formed by landscapes and cultural traditions that are so different from my own that their work has an almost mystical quality for me. Textile designers and ceramicists here are working in rich, earthy palettes that are such a refreshing contrast to what I typically see in New York. A lot of the exciting restaurants and cafes in Cape Town are working with local artists to create site-specific installations that really celebrate and combine the creative communities in a great way. I love when a city can band together and connect creative people in different disciplines in a way that lets the local community really shine. I also love that many of the local designers here are focusing on using recycled materials and making them a big part of their work process.

I know there are a lot of people out there that love Lonny. I do, too (mostly). Most of the latest issue is nice but not really mind blowing except for the awesome house in North Carolina. How gorgeous are these rooms?

And you know I'm an India Hicks fan (check out my blog roll!) . They have a great interview with her partner, David Flint Wood, with a look into their guest house, King's Treat.

There is also a sneak peek into their own residence. Of course it doesn't help at all that I'm dying to move closer to the sea, but the small touches like the bowl of cricket balls in their entrance way is the kind of thing I think really makes a house into a home.

Durban Deco

One of the reasons Durban is such a cool place to visit, besides the sea and sun, is the architecture. If you've been to Miami's South Beach, it may remind you somewhat of being there... although I've been to South Beach and Durban is much, much better (having said that, is a good Cuban restaurant in Durban?).

And the great thing about these photos, is that this is where my great aunt used to live! The mural is just beautiful - and perfect, considering the building is on the esplanade and opposite the harbour.

After the wet and windy weekend, let's head to one of my most favourites places - Durban. My grandparents lived there for many years, so every second Christmas during my childhood we'd head down to the sea and surf, and have a wonderful time. It's where I learned to love the sea.

"Thanks so much for asking me to post about Durban. I’ve lived here my whole life, except for a 3 year stint in the UK, so it’s definitely home and I love it.
Durban is on the east coast of South Africa and much to the envy of our bigger South African cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, we pretty much have summer all year round. Blue skies, gorgeous beaches, sizzling temperatures in summer and we’re all surprised if it drops below 20°C in winter! This weather affords us the opportunity to be outdoors most of the time, so if you’re ever in this part of the world, make sure you hit our beaches, even if you’re not a sun baby {I’m not!}

Hotspot One: A Durban beachfront adventure
Hire a vintage bicycle and pedal our beautiful promenade, from the spectacular Moses Mabhida Stadium, all the way to the Moyo Pier at Vetchies. Streetscene Tours can arrange a picnic on the stadium lawns or pop past Café Jiran for delicious cappuccinos and muffins. Or do the cruise at sunset and hit Moyo at the end of the pier for insanely delicious mango daiquiri sundowners!

Hotspot Two: Morningside, Berea & Glenwood
These Durban suburbs are jam packed with great restaurants and stores - Florida & Davenport Roads are very popular, as you can walk from place to place and pick and choose where to eat & drink. Given the opportunity, I’d start at the top of Florida Road, walk down to Mo Noodles which is next door to the Spar and have a starter lentil/feta & calamari combo – my favourite meal in the whole of Durban hands down! Then head further down to Spiga, an Italian restaurant run by the Santoniccolo family and polish off a pizza or pasta with lashings of balsamic, chilli & garlic. Finish off with a frozen yogurt from Yogaberry and then roll home ☺.

If you’re just keen on dinner and drinks followed by a bit of a party, hit Czar for sushi & tapas and cool music – especially on Friday nights.

Shop at Cecile & Boyd’s for gorgeous home décor, or pop in at The Space for local clothing designers Colleen Eitzen, Amanda Laird Cherry and Leigh Schubert, as well as beautiful home décor accessories, sourced by Neil Roake. You can also browse through the African Art Centre and Contemporary Life further down Florida Road. Once you’re at the bottom of Florida, you have to head to The Freedom Café for coffee and cake. This restaurant is adjacent to The Concierge Bungalows – an oasis of tranquillity in the heart of Morningside with beautifully appointed guest rooms all furnished and decorated by Neil Roake & Egg Designs.

Two other highly recommended restaurants in this area are Market on Marriott Road and 9th Ave Bistro in Avondale Centre. You should also head to Windermere Road and visit home décor store Karrin Hatfield, which stocks Pierre Cronje & Clinton Friedman, as well as gorgeous goose down cushions.
More home décor is available at Couch + Interiors further up Windermere Road – you can quench your thirst there too at Couch Café {shopping is thirsty business!}

On the Berea is a new spot called Unity which is owned by the Café 1999 owners and it’s already becoming a Durban favourite – serving craft beers & a delicious menu ranging from snacky starters & platters to burgers, curries and bangers & mash. My Glenwood store favourites are Mooi, where Genevieve Motley has a pop-up shop, Wow, Finder’s Keeper’s, Earthmother Organic, The NSA Gallery and iKhaya and I never pass up an opportunity to pop in to The Corner Café for coffee and either breakfast or lunch.

Hotspot Three: Durban’s Markets
We have quite a few markets in Durban, both food and craft markets which take place at various times of the month. Local crafters, foodies, creatives, clever-people, tree-huggers, coffee-addicts, macaroon-guzzlers, craft beer-sluggers and clothes designers all unite at these markets and showcase some incredible Durban talent – go hungry and with a full wallet!

As I write this, its Sunday evening, the wind is rustling in the trees and it's quiet. Well, the wind is rustling a bit more than usual - today Irene made her way through Boston, but luckily as a tropical storm and not as a hurricane. So lucky because she had lost a lot of steam along the way, and although we saw more rain and wind as we've seen in most of the area's notorious Nor'Easters, it seems most of Massachusetts is doing ok. We know people are without power, and some have had trees come down but it could've been worse. My thoughts go out to those without power and those further south (to read more of what a hurricane can do, go here and here).

Summer in New England

Yes, the silence can be overwhelming...

Its that time of year when autumn looms just over the horizon. So I haven't been blogging all that much. Two major factors, really - getting ready to launch my own project (yes!) at work for the first time at the end of the month, PLUS trying to enjoy the short New England summer as much as possible before the ocean turns chilly and I have to get out of the water. This summer the hubster and I also started a new hobby - stand up paddle boarding. And I am completely hooked. We are trying to get out on the water as much as humanly possible. So in between work and getting to the sea as much as possible, blog posts may be a bit thin on the ground, and I apologize. But I do have some awesome links on my blogroll, so do please take a look around.

And here's a taste of my ambitions on a stand up paddle board. Not anywhere close to this yet but a girl can dream.

Cape Town Wedding

Let's keep the flavour (Cape Town) local!

I recently saw, and loved, this wedding that took place in a pear orchard near Cape Town on frolic! The lovely couple are Jess and Caleb, and it seems they did much of the decoration themselves, inspired by the Sami communities in Sweden where Jess has spent time.

I think its just delightful, and Kate McLuckie's photography is beautiful: you can plainly see the love between these two and the people they surround themselves with.

Tour South Africa: Cape Town

Today I'm introducing a series called Tour South Africa. I've asked a few of my favourite South African bloggers to share what they love about where they live. I so often am asked by people I meet here in the States, what is South Africa like?, where are interesting place to visit?, what I can I do in South Africa?, is the food and wine/beer good? So here's the first of a series of virtual travels in the beautiful country of South Africa.

Firstly, a trip to Kalk Bay is a must. It's a small seaside village that has that permanent holiday feeling all year round. Full of quirky, little shops, restaurants and galleries, it makes for a fun outing. I highly recommend having scrambled eggs and a croissant at C'est la vie, a sweet bakery tucked away on a cobbled side street. {C'est la vie, Rosmead Road, Kalk Bay}

A trip to The Old Biscuit Mill is another must, especially on a Saturday morning when they hold the Neighbour Goods Market there. Make sure you get there early to beat the crowds and enjoy a morning of discovering great local clothing, jewelry, organic foods and more. {The Old Biscuit Mill, 373 - 375 Albert Rd, Woodstock}

Lastly a trip out into the winelands makes for a great day out. There are so many wine farms to explore so make sure you have enough time. Along the Helshoogte Pass on the Stellenbosch wine route, you'll find three top wine farms right next to each other, Tokara, Delaire Graff and Thelema. Make sure you visit each and experience their unique differences and then enjoy a light lunch at Tokara's deli. {DeliCatessen at Tokara, Helshoogte Pass, Stellenbosch}"

South End Garden Tour 2011

Every year I spend a day peeking into the beautiful back yards of the good people of the South End. If you've visited Boston you'll know this area is known for its brownstones, cobbled streets, and fantastic shopping and eating. Its also the neighbourhood of a dear friend of mine, and it's she that I get to do the South End Garden Tour with (um, but that's not us in the pic!).

The tour is varies each year, going to different homes and gardens, and revealing new things. This year there were artists at a lot of the venues, painting artwork that would later be sold at a reception. I also had the pleasure of meeting Didi, the Italian Greyhound at one of the gardens, seeing an amazing rooftop of an ex-fire station and finding those little details at each place that made it special.

The day started off at the lovely Buttery. Nom nom! A little coffee and a bite to sustain our ambling.

One of the first places we saw was Montgomery Park (like all the pics in this post, you can click on it to see it bigger). These amazing hidden gardens are actually a large shared park behind houses of the same name, and shared by the residents of those homes. Most of the time we were there, my friend and I were plotting how we could move in!

As we walked from there to the next stop on the tour, I had a chance to really appreciate the architecture of the neighbourhood. How is it that even if you live somewhere, you hardly ever slow down to really look?

We also got a sneaky peek inside some of the homes! How fantastic is that wallpaper on the left? And how clever to have French Doors that open like a balcony?

The night before the Boston ice hockey team, the Bruins, had won the Stanley Cup for the first time. So just a couple miles away the team was parading through Boston... the entire garden tour had a soundtrack of news helicopters overhead, and for the first time ever, I saw a huge flag flown from a building in Boston. It was gigantic.

But the highlight of the day were the gardens, of course.

It was great. Can't wait for next year!

Miss Millib

I saw this last week on one of my favourite SA blogs, Miss Millib. Not only beautiful pics, but gorgeous, gorgeous clothes.

The designer is Doreen Southwood, who is also founder and owner of retail boutique MeMeMe, and Miss Millib is somehow also affiliated with MeMeMe. I love Miss Millib's authentic, honest and fun posts, they are always a highlight to read.

Anyway, whatever the connection, I kept looking for Doreen's work and found this image.

Love this dress. LOVE IT. I would have absolutely nowhere to wear it (unless Charlene finally invites me for a visit), so I think I'd just have to do the vacuuming in it!

After writing about Frances last week, she got in touch with me and told me about a project she is doing besides her photography. She has a little etsy shop. There isn't much to buy but what she sells is not little at all.

If you're an interior decor nut like me, and live in the US, I'm sure you've already signed up for One Kings Lane... I've only bought one thing from the site but the daily inspiration is a fantastic addition to my inbox, everyday around noon.

These were for sale last week, so are gone already, but I do love their nautical and dramatic aura. Feels like there must be a story behind them... I would hang in them in my island getaway (if I had one!), a la India Hicks style.

Bionic Man: Oscar Pistorius

I look forward to reading the Style section of the New York Times every week, and so today was a special pleasure when I went online and saw these eyes looking back at me.

It's Oscar Pistorius, South African sprinter. And bionic man, if you keep reading.

Oscar features in the new Thierry Mugler fragrance campaign, which highlights Oscar's unique feature - he runs with prosthetic blades as he was born without fibulas in his legs. There has been a bit of controversy surrounding Oscar, if you haven't already heard about it. He wants to compete with able-bodied athletes but there are concerns that those amazing blades would give him an unfair advantage.

Well, that may all still be up in the air but two things are for sure: good for Thierry Mugler for widening the net of how beauty is represented in the fashion world and the media, and boy, do we South Africans produce some good looking individuals.

Missing Missibaba

If you're familiar with South African design, and with my blog, you may have noticed that I've never blogged about Missibaba. Well, its because I really try to blog about stuff I love, I don't blog about things just because they're South African. And you see, Missibaba makes wonderful stuff, its just not quite my taste.

But the other day I came across this post on Babazeka, and it got me to go to their website for the first time in ages. And I saw this bag. LOVE IT.

Gorgeous! So go over to their website and take a look, you might find something that you love, too. Or their etsy store... I'm not sure I have the $525 for the bag, but I can enjoy it from afar. Sigh.

As you all know, I've been following the other Royal wedding with fascination. I suppose I could never really believe that a girl from my homeland could one day be a princess.

Well, I've a read a few things the past few days that have given me pause. But after reading what Robyn had to say, and reading this vogue.com article and this one, I feel better. Charlene is a beautiful woman who is going to do us proud. I don't want to be glib, here. But she has an opportunity to make a huge difference and I know she will. Until she gets her feet on the ground, let's enjoy her beautiful wedding. I do think her wedding dress and her civil ceremony outfit are lovely, but the dress she wore to the reception is my favourite.

Impressions of India

To kick off my new-found global freedom, I want to share one of my favourite things: Indian block print textiles. If you remember, a short while ago I made a headboard covered in a block print fabric (you can check it out here) and it's kind of being a catalyst to bring in more of that beautiful art form into my house.

Have you seen John Robshaw's textiles? Just glorious, glorious stuff but a wee bit out of my price range.

Also so, so inspiring is Emersonmade... not only are her clothes classic and chic, but I think she's really funny! Not to mention a gal (she's definitely a "gal", I think) who's hard-working and making things happen for herself. Anyway, I digress. Here's what caught my eye (from her hilarious blog)

I love the colours, the textures... the henna! I know she is making caftans (which are not really my bag) but also tunics, which are just gorgeous.

Those tunics are also a wee bit out of my price range, but I'm not sure if you've noticed if you are repeatedly attracted to (and sometimes buy) the same things over and over so, luckily, I had already bought a beautiful tunic from my favourite Indian import store, Adivasi, in Brattleboro, Vermont a while back. If you are ever in Brattleboro, I strongly suggest you pop in for textiles, clothing, those awesome lunch pails, jewellery and old Bollywood posters.

The other place I've come across for block print textiles is Rikshaw Design. The only bummer is that they doesn't have any king-size textiles... but they do have lots for babies, children and (woohoo!) lovely women's clothing.

My final stop on my Indian tour is West Elm (believe it or not!). Somewhere along the line I saw this video, and as a graphic designer and lover of all things fabric and block printed, I was mesmerized. The confidence! The lack of hesitation! I am in awe.

So I took a look at their quilts... and found it. I did a little shopping on Saturday and this gorgeous yellow quilt came home with me. Really, really light and soft, its perfect for summer.

A New Beginning

Over four years ago I started South of the Sahara because I love South African art, design, crafting, decor and all those related wonderful things but I couldn't find anything online about these things. As you know, if you read this blog regularly, I live far away from my homeland in Boston, so I had to harass family and friends to bring decor and design magazines with them when they came to visit... or I had to buy loads of them when I went home for holidays. So I decided to do something about it and start writing about that stuff myself. And so South of the Sahara was born.

But four years is a long time. Even longer in the electronic age. I look around and feel like there is tons of South African loveliness online now, and by people who are there, right in the midst of everything. So their information is more up-to-date than mine, and usually more detailed.

So I think its time for a new beginning. Yes, this will still be about South African art, design, crafting, decor and all those related wonderful things. But it will also be about other places, other wonderful, soul-fulfilling, inspiring things. South of the Sahara will never be navel-gazing, or about what you should buy. No! This little blog will be about what amazingly beautiful things people do and create, what's out there that can move your soul and make you think.

I hope you like this, and will join me on my new journey. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what inspires you too!

Charlene Wittstock Gracing the Pages of Vogue

Although it is probably the least blogged about part implied in the "artsy/designery/craftsy" thing in my blog's name, but I do enjoy fashion. I'm not the most adventurous dresser but I love seeing those who are, and seeing what's new. So I started a Vogue magazine subscription a few months ago, and have not really been blown away by the couple issues I've received. But on Friday I got the July issue, with, not only fantastic fashion shoots and great articles, BUT a short little bit of insight into my favourite royal crush, Charlene Wittstock.

It was a nice interview, I felt like I could hear her voice more than I've heard before. You can read the article here, if you don't get the magazine.

I can't wait to see her wedding in July, but until then, let's enjoy these pics by Karl Lagerfeld.

The Chinese Girl

You may have noticed this cushions at the end of my last post.

They feature artwork I'm sure you recognize, too. The artwork is by Vladimir Tretchikoff, a Russian artist who lived in South Africa for many years. His work gained notoriety as the epitome of kitsch but it was exhibited all over the world, and sold in the millions. Personally, I remember learning to do the locomotion with my best buddy in grade 4 under a Tretchi painting at her parents' house. They were everywhere.

I noticed this article a couple weeks ago on the Mail & Guardian website, about the woman who says she is the face of the Chinese Girl. Interesting reading.

Brimfield 2011

It's been a few weeks since I went to Brimfield, but I finally have some pics to share with you, if you'd like to see.

Brimfield is a GIANT antiques fair out in Western Massachusetts that is held 3 times a year. It's a treasure hunt, a foray into the past and also a quest for perfection. There is a lot to see at Brimfield... this past spring, we were there for 5 hours and only made it through 3 fields. There are 21 fields. And there are 5000 vendors... and anything and everything is for sale, because its not all antiques. Anyway, its good to get there early if you have something special in mind that you are after, but we go just for fun so we don't rush. I had decided beforehand what I wanted, so I went with those things in mind (there is too much stuff to look at otherwise!) and I knew what a good price for them would be.

What did we buy? Opalescent hobnail glass, a small silver bowl, a gift that I can't put up because the person who its for may see it, a painting and a print.

Opalescent hobnail glass is divine. You get it in all sorts of shapes and sizes but I needed bud vases and that's what I focused on... I chose blue and white (if you see my house, you will think those are predictable choices!) but there are all sorts of colors, including an eery yellow-green that has minute traces of uranium in it, and it glows under UV light. Anyway, here are my sweet finds.

The small silver bowl is because I couldn't find a bigger one, which is what I originally had in mind but it is so, so sweet and small and I'm glad I didn't find a bigger one.

The painting was unplanned. I spotted it walking past a booth for the second time, and I'm not very religious, nor am I Catholic but the painting is so tender I couldn't pass it by. Besides, those warm colours are just delightful to look at.

Finally, the print is of a DC3, and was the hubby's choice. I want to get it framed for his birthday... we found it at a dealer who must have had thousands of prints, and very funny printed stuff like Baywatch trading card galleys that have never been cut. Anyway, the hubby had to dig around for a long time before he found the right plane.

If you are ever in Western Massachusetts in May, July or September, I suggest you make a stop. Take a look around, as you never know what you might find.
