A New Beginning

Over four years ago I started South of the Sahara because I love South African art, design, crafting, decor and all those related wonderful things but I couldn't find anything online about these things. As you know, if you read this blog regularly, I live far away from my homeland in Boston, so I had to harass family and friends to bring decor and design magazines with them when they came to visit... or I had to buy loads of them when I went home for holidays. So I decided to do something about it and start writing about that stuff myself. And so South of the Sahara was born.

But four years is a long time. Even longer in the electronic age. I look around and feel like there is tons of South African loveliness online now, and by people who are there, right in the midst of everything. So their information is more up-to-date than mine, and usually more detailed.

So I think its time for a new beginning. Yes, this will still be about South African art, design, crafting, decor and all those related wonderful things. But it will also be about other places, other wonderful, soul-fulfilling, inspiring things. South of the Sahara will never be navel-gazing, or about what you should buy. No! This little blog will be about what amazingly beautiful things people do and create, what's out there that can move your soul and make you think.

I hope you like this, and will join me on my new journey. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what inspires you too!

Thanks Ansie! I think that I can still highlight awesome SA stuff while I let my own personality shine through a bit, too :)

@Andrea, hopefully this week I'll get up a good mix of SA and other goodies :) Get ready to be INSPIRED!

@Anonymous, I have a huge soft spot for lots and lots of scripty fonts... just a bit romantic!

K.... I cant remember exactly how I stumbled upon your original blog in the first place: I think I must have missed the first two years but I certainly dug deep once I had found you and have enjoyed the range of your posts since. I have also had the reflected glory of forwarding some of your links to friends about stuff I thought they might enjoy too... Having lived away from SA for a long time myself I appreciated your angle of interest in what was going on 'back home' or with those that shared a familiar/overlapping background who had also flown the nest...

You make a valid point about resident locals being in the midst of it all and perhaps more at the cutting edge but sometimes the view over your shoulder or from the sidelines gives an interesting perspective...I have certainly enjoyed yours and enjoyed the clarity of your postings.

Good luck with your new direction ... I am sure a more widely cast net will show your more recent exposures and interests and continue to provide an interesting read.
best wishes d

Thanks so much D! I definitely will keep posting about SA... but I think I needed to let the pressure off as I've been feeling like I was being left behind. The new links I have under "Goodies from Southern Shores" are the websites and blogs I was thinking of... they have a lot of really good info. But I do look forward to still meeting you here :)
